Reducing Wrinkles with BOTOX

BOTOX is an in-office treatment that reduces the appearance of dynamic facial lines. It is made of a purified neurotoxin called botulinum toxin type A, which is extremely safe and effective. BOTOX is administered via several small injections using a very fine needle into the areas of concern. Patients usually compare treatment to the sensation of a mosquito bite, and each session only takes a few minutes.

What are Dynamic Lines?

Starting in our early thirties, facial lines and wrinkles start to form. Some of these are called “dynamic lines.” These are the lines that are exacerbated by certain facial expressions. Examples include the lines between the eyebrows that deepen when we frown; the lines across our forehead, which are more noticeable when we raise our eyebrows; and crow’s feet, which are more evident when we smile or squint. 

Developing dynamic lines is a natural part of the aging process, but some individuals form them earlier than others. For some, these lines don’t show up when their face is relaxed; for others, they do show up when the face is relaxed (and become even more prominent during certain expressions). These dynamic lines can be reduced or eliminated with BOTOX treatments, helping maintain a natural and more youthful appearance.

How Exactly Does BOTOX Work?

In a very precise manner, BOTOX temporarily weakens the underlying muscles that are causing wrinkles to form. Typically, when you frown or raise your eyebrows, your nerves send out a neurotransmitter that binds to receptors in your muscles and tells them to contract. BOTOX works by blocking the signal of acetylcholine from the nerves to the muscles, thereby causing the muscles to relax and the appearance of wrinkles to soften.

What Happens During a BOTOX Treatment?

One of the best things about BOTOX injections is how fast and convenient treatments are. With sessions lasting around 15-20 minutes on average, patients love how fast they are in and out of the office. Before the injections begin, we will cleanse your skin and apply a numbing cream if you would like. A very fine needle will be used to inject the BOTOX directly into your facial muscles, which feels like a small pinch.

Downtime and Results with BOTOX

Following BOTOX treatments, you can immediately return to your regular activities. In some cases, there may be a red spot or a bruise, which can easily be covered with makeup. 

After your BOTOX treatment, Dr. Shuster recommends avoiding lying down for four hours, strenuous activities, tanning of any sort, and excessive heat for two days. No pressure should be applied to your face for one week, and you should avoid any other facial procedures for two weeks.

BOTOX results become apparent within 2-3 weeks and typically last for 3-5 months, at which point you can schedule a maintenance appointment.
